Hard Fought Victory Maintains 2nd’s 100% Record

Playing away at Rossendale on the aptly named Marl Pits ground is never easy. To be fair the ground was in reasonably good condition despite the recent amount of rain, and also helped by improvements made to the drainage system.

Today saw the return after injury of Jake Ashall for his first match of the season with his uncompromising tackling and customary yellow card! Virtually the whole match was played up the centre of the pitch and the ball not often moved out to the wings, and when it was the poor handling conditions, with rain throughout, frequently resulted in spilled balls from both sides. Tackling was of a high standard during the whole of the game, and scoring chances were limited for both teams.

Lymm kicked off playing down the slope with a strong wind blowing across the pitch, which it did for the whole match. The first period was played in the Rossendale half with them only managing to advance into Lymm territory on one occasion. Never-the-less possession was evenly matched. On 15 mins a long high kick from Rossendale was caught by scum-half Tom Shard outside the touchline, who took a quick throw-in, the ball quickly crossing the pitch to left-wing Luke Critchley, who raced in along the wing to score an unconverted try. 5-0

After 25 mins, Ashall broke from a scrum, making yardage before passing out to the supporting Jorge Reynolds who scored close to the corner flag, fending off a covering tackle. Shard excellently converted from the touchline to make it 12-0.

The pattern of the second half was similar to the first, committed tackling from both sides with the ball rarely moving out to the wings. Although the game was mainly played in the Lymm half, frequent forays were made by Lymm into the opposition’s half, though no clear try scoring chances were made by either side. Rossendale had a good share of possession and it was felt that if they could score once, the match could be in the balance. Ashall picked up his yellow card after 10 mins for a high tackle, but Rossendale failed to take any advantage during his enforced absence.

As the minutes ticked by and the game drew to its close, victory was becoming assured. In the last minute a quick tap-penalty by Rossendale was intercepted by Ashall who raced in from 30 yards under the posts for Shard to make an easy conversion.
