HALBRO North West Leagues – Cotton Traders Championship League

Report by Malcolm Pritchard

Lymm returned to the scene of their victory last week expecting a tough encounter from a Macc side that showed great spirit in the second half last week after being outplayed in the first half. Conditions were similar but there was a cold wind across the ground.

Lymm kicked off but immediately got themselves into trouble by giving penalties and territory away. It was obvious that Macc were not going to lie down and they ran hard, capitalising on Lymm errors. Lymm had to scramble and clear their line on a number occasions, with Tom Shard keeping a cool head under pressure. They continued to make errors, either dropped or forward passes and infringing at the breakdown. Struggling to get any moment, it was no surprise when after thinking they had weathered the initial pressure, they gave a try away through an interception, (7-0). At this stage James Lewis and Jack Harper joined the fray and immediately up the speed of play. It was after a prolonged period of pressure that Lymm eventually broke down the Macc defence for Jorge Reynolds to get on the end of some good passing and score an unconverted try, (7-5). Soon afterwards Dave Coon won a turnover on the halfway line and quick hands released Toby Phillips who ghosted in from 40 metres, unopposed for an unconverted try.

Ht 7-10

The second half started with Lymm’s defence line speed putting Macc under pressure and another turnover resulted in Tom Shard releasing Jorge Reynolds for another unconverted try (7-15). However Macc were not giving in and with Lymm still making handling errors, they fought hard to score a pushover try which was converted, (14-15). So, with 25 minutes to go it was anyone’s game. However, almost immediately James Yates went over from a line out with Tom Shard converting, (14-22) The game was beginning to open up and Lymm’s superior fitness and pace were starting to tell as they ran in two quick tries through the strong running Grant Sneddon and Jorge Reynolds, one of which was converted, (14-34).This took the game out of Macc’s reach and even though the game was becoming scrappy, Lymm managed two more tries, Shard converting one. One was an individual effort by Richie McEvoy, who beat two men then chipped over the full back to score an excellent try. The other came after a strong break by Reece Forrest, who was tackled close to the line but Alec Stewart and James Pitcher gave excellent support for James to go over for the final try.

Ft 14-46 This was a tough game with Lymm only getting on top in the last 25 minutes, when it went to uncontested scrums. However the defence was good throughout and eventually fitness told. James Yates was outstanding as usual and he will be sadly missed as he moves out of the area to pursue his career. We wish him well as he’s been a loyal servant over a number of years. However I don’t think it’ll be the last we see of him!!

Next Saturday, Lymm 2’s are at home to Wilmslow 2’s; Lymm 1’s travel to play 3rd placed Harrogate, both 3pm KO’s
