Robinson Hat-Trick in Convincing Win for Lymm 2’s
It was wintery and wet conditions on Saturday as Lymm entertained Rochdale. Overnight rain sleet had left the pitch damp but it had recovered remarkably well.
Lymm kicked off attacking away from the clubhouse and it was after only two minutes play that Richard Halford thundered down the outside centre channel, to put James Robinson in for a try wide out, Rhys Jones converting, 7-0. 5 minutes later a slick back move from a scrum released James Robinson again who raced to the line from 40 metres for an unconverted try.12-0. At this point, Rochdale were struggling to hold the Lymm backs, who looked like scoring every time they got possession. A break in midfield by Rhys Jones saw him round the full back to go in under the posts for a try which he converted, 19-0.
Rochdale slowly got into the game and started to retain possession using pick and drive tactics, which saw Lymm’s progress halted for 15 minutes. However after good play down the left wing a line out from 10 metres resulted in a drive over try for James Pitcher which Rhys Jones converted. 26-0. Then just before half time Lymm moved the ball around the pitch through various hands with the final scoring pass given by hard working forward Henry Baldwin to James Robinson who completed his hat trick, Rhys Jones converting, 33-0. Ht 33-0 Conditions were now very cold with a cutting wind and showers making playing conditions difficult. To Rochdale’s credit they never gave up and dominated possession for long periods of the second half but made unforced errors as they tied to force the game. Lymm however took their chances well and from a line out close to the Rochdale line, repeated pick and drives ended with Ben Rees scoring a try, Nolan converting, 40-0. Rochdale then had a period of consistency with good ball retention. They came back strongly and camped in Lymm’s half scoring 3 unconverted tries, 40-15. In the last ten minutes Lymm took back control with Rhys Jones and Richard Halford scoring tries, one of which was converted by Jones.
FT 52-15. Lymm started this game very well but it was difficult to keep this going in the conditions, especially as Rochdale competed to the end. Richard Halford was dangerous whenever he got the ball, Rhys Jones had a good game in the centre scoring two tries through his pace and kicking superbly in the conditions. In the forwards the young front row performed well with Matty Hands excellent in the scrum and loose. Next week they are away to Preston Grasshoppers 3rdXV.
